Gas fires sitting in the original cast iron fireplaces are common in N16. Most are conventional flue fires that rely on the old brick chimney. If the chimney is blocked, or a roofer has capped the pot, fumes can come back into the room. A gas fire service includes a check that the flue draws properly and a test that fumes are not spilling out. If you no longer use the fire, it can be disconnected and the gas capped.
